Cowgirl Up! 2019
The “Cowgirl Up! Art from the Other Half of the West” exhibition and sale will return to the Desert Caballeros Western Museum for its 14th year from March 29 through May 12, 2019. Conceived in 2006 to offer a platform for women in the male-dominated genre of Western art, “CU!” has become one of the premiere national events for women Western artists. The 2019 exhibition and sale will showcase over 200 paintings, drawings, and sculptures by 56 of the nation’s best women artists.
More than 50 of the artists will convene in Wickenburg for the show’s opening weekend, March 29 – 31. Frontier Street in front of the Museum will transform into a tented venue for dining, dancing, bidding, and camaraderie. Friday night is the Miniatures Cash & Carry Sale and Artist & Patrons Party, where attendees can bid on artworks from the show’s Miniatures Gallery and take their purchases home the same night. The evening will finish with a dance under the tent with the band Trio Rio, sponsored by Karol DeVore and Rox Corbett.
On Saturday morning, Dr. Katherine Benton-Cohen, Associate Professor of History at Georgetown University, will lead a discussion on “Politics and Art in the Fight for Western Women’s Suffrage” in the Museum’s Cultural Crossroads Learning Center. The day will conclude with the “Bash & Bid” Sale, Awards Dinner and Live Auction under the tent, where patrons will have the opportunity to purchase full-sized pieces of art from the show’s Main Gallery.
The weekend will finish on the morning of Sunday, Mar. 31 with the crowd-favorite Chuck Wagon Breakfast, Quick Draw, and Live Auction. Over 20 participating “Cowgirl Up!” artists will line the street in front of the Museum, armed with paintbrushes and sculpting tools. Their mission: to complete a work of art from start to finish in only 90 minutes. After the time is up, the artworks go straight to the auction block for attendees to bid on.
The exhibition and sale will continue through Sunday, May 12, 2019. Proceeds from the “Cowgirl Up!” exhibition and opening weekend benefit the endeavors of the participating artists and of the Desert Caballeros Western Museum.
