Food Boxes at Christmas

Food Boxes to Help Families in Need:
Several years ago, it was brought to my attention that a very large number of children in our community were either receiving a fully paid or partially paid lunch at school. These students were from families who qualified for the Federal program based on their income level. What really surprised me was that the percentage of families that qualified was greater than 70 percent of the student population. I also learned from our school administrators that for many of our children in our community the meals at school were their main food supply for the day.
During the Christmas break, our schools are closed for a two-week period. This of course includes the school food program. Knowing that many of our families here in Wickenburg are struggling to “make ends meet” …their task becomes greater as they stretch their funds as best, they can while trying to provide something for their children beyond their basic needs.

What We Have Done in the Past:
Several of my friends from our church (CCV) began to put together food boxes to help those families over the Christmas Break. It started out with just a few dozen boxes. However, the need was more in the range of a few hundred boxes. Our elementary school alone has close to 250 children on the Federal program and there are of course more at the middle school and high school. If we were to look just a few miles beyond our town…the families in need grows significantly.
In past years, some of our local churches have joined in to help us and we were able to get the number of boxes up to one hundred. Last year Benner-Nawman Inc. and its employees contributed over $7,000 (including the boxes) and at a cost of about $43.00 per box, we were able to create 180 boxes. Others in our community including “The Place” church, Century 21, and Wickenburg Ranch helped push the total up to the 275 level. However, we are still far short of helping all the families in need.

Our Plan for This Year:
This holiday season, Benner-Nawman Inc. and its employees are providing a base amount of $8,000 and we are asking others in our community to join with us in creating additional boxes. This can be done by for profit organizations, churches, and non-profit groups by gathering funds…and/or creating boxes themselves.
Individuals can also take the list of items that we recommend…buy those food items…and bring them to Benner-Nawman for packaging by Monday, December 16th. Empty boxes can be picked up at Benner-Nawman after the Thanksgiving holiday.

NOTE: Please DO NOT add candy or perishable to your food boxes. We ask that you fill boxes only with the items we suggest. It will cost this year about $46.00 per box.
We will be assembling the boxes at Benner-Nawman Inc. on Tuesday, December 17th for delivery to the schools that afternoon. We hope you will consider joining us by filling boxes yourself and bringing them to Benner-Nawman. You can also help us assemble boxes at our location on December 17th

Our Goal:
Wickenburg is an amazing community and each of us knows how thankful and bless we are to be able to enjoy our community and its surroundings. The thought of children in our community not having enough to eat during the holidays does not sit well with any of us. This simple act of kindness by providing food for families that are struggling can be achieved this year where no family in need is left out.
